Sonny Monroe Obituary

James C. "Sonny" Monroe

Sonny was born in Huntsville, AL to James “Jim” and Joy Monroe. He grew up in Meridianville, AL on his family’s farm, following in his daddy’s footsteps every minute he could. He was his daddy’s shadow.

Sonny attended Meridianville School from 1st grade through 8th grade forming life long friendships. After leaving Meridianville, he went to Hazel Green High School, graduating in 1972. While at Hazel Green he was a student Bus Driver driving bus number 48. During the 11th grade he meet Judy Hill. They started dating on October 10, 1970, attending the Hazel Green/Ardmore football game in Ardmore, AL.

Sonny and Judy continued to date until April 26, 1974 when they married in the Meridianville Cumberland Presbyterian Church. After 10 years of marriage, they welcomed their first child in 1984 with four more to follow within five years. In 1985 Sonny and Judy became members of the MCPC and have continued to support the church in many ways. Sonny served as an Elder from 1993 until his passing.

Sonny went to work in 1973 for Wells & Tate Electric. He worked until 1983 when he retired, hanging up his tool belt for full-time farming. Just last week, the doctor asked him what he did for a living. Sonny told her, “I worked as an electrician until 1983 when I quit to start farming full-time. From that day on, I never worked another day because I was doing something that I loved”. His two sons, Jamie and Jody, grew up as he did, following their daddy around in his footsteps. The three of them worked side-by-side. This last year saw them taking on more as their daddy was in two-year battle with cancer. During this time, he continued doing what he loved on days that he could. Last fall, he climbed in the combine and cut every acre of soybeans. This past June, he cut wheat with two tumors pressing on his spine. He continued to fight this disease; he did not retreat - he was overtaken.

Our hearts are broken but we know he is no longer in pain and we know we will see him again.

Sonny was preceded in death by his father, James “Jim” Monroe, his grandparents, Claude and Ann Monroe, Homer and Renee Hopkins, and Newell and Daisy Troglen.

Sonny is survived by his wife of 48 years Judy; His sons: James Claude “Jamie” Monroe, II (Kayla) and Jody Bryson Monroe; His daughters, Jaclyn Carol Monroe, Joy Caitlin Monroe, and Jillian Freda “Jill” Monroe.
