Luella Ames Obituary

Luella Mae Johnson Ames, age 91, of Athens, Alabama went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 22, 2022 in Athens.

Luella was born October 13, 1930 in Chautauqua County, New York, to Victor and Mary Agnes Johnson.  She had one brother, Robert Johnson, and one sister, Irene E. Johnson Rhebergen.  She was married on August 22, 1952 in Brocton, New York to Allan Garfield Ames, and remained his loving wife and partner until his death on August 12, 2016.

She earned a degree in Elementary Education from the University of the State of New York at Fredonia, receiving her Teacher’s Certificate on May 5, 1952 from the New York State Education Department.  Although she taught for a limited time in the public school system, she primarily utilized her education and experience to further the cause of Christ by teaching children in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and similar Church settings.

Luella was a born-again Christian.  She will be remembered as a loving Christian wife and mother who worked tirelessly to serve the Lord every day and in every aspect of her life.  She was known for faithfully reading the Scriptures on a daily basis.  She was a strong believer in the power of prayer, and actively demonstrated it throughout her live.  In addition to being the wife of a Baptist minister, rearing five (5) children, actively maintaining a household, and teaching in the Church; she also played the piano for church services, and actively worked to encourage family, church members and others…all while displaying a concern for those around her and a devotion to her Lord and Savior.

She enjoyed growing flowers in gardens around her home, and loved to watch birds, especially hummingbirds eating at the feeders near her kitchen window.  She successfully grew indoor plants as well. They were small house plants…with one notable exception.  A couple of years ago, she decided to grow three (3) pineapple plants.  She started them in separate pots outside, but had them moved into her kitchen before winter to protect them from the cold temperatures.  Although they started out small, her green thumb eventually resulted in them becoming so large they had to be “forcibly removed” in order to allow her to retake possession of her kitchen.  (She never tried that again.)

Luella is preceded in death by her parents Victor and Mary Agnes Johnson, her brother Robert Johnson, her sister Irene E. Johnson Rhebergen, her husband Allan, and her son Dale.  She is survived by her children Donald and wife Debra; Diana Pettit and husband Rusty; Daniel and wife Diane; and David and wife Michelle; as well as 14 grandchildren, their spouses, and 32 great grandchildren.  Grandchildren include Donald Ames Jr., Danielle Kicher and husband Michael, Darci Metcalf and husband Mike, Dixon Ames and wife Katie, Mandi Wolfe and husband Stephen, Kari Hyman and husband Jason, Dawn Cano and husband Jonathan, Dana Walker and husband Matt, Daniel W. Ames, Amanda Miller and husband Matt, Olivia Ames, Emerson Ames, Dylan Ames and wife Catie, and Bailey Ames.  Great grandchildren include Ellie, Becca, Abbie and Tripp Ames; Kate, Allie, Sophie and Isabelle Kicher; Madi, Zeke, Brody and Lincoln Metcalf; Jay, Levi, and Sadie Ames; Maddie, Aubrey, Alexis and Olivia Wolfe; Marissa, Mollie, Jase and Jonas Hyman; Dawson, Preston and Harrison Cano; Skylar and Luke Walker; Ana Ames; Wyatt Ames; and Ozzy and Scarlet Miller.
