Edward John Carroll    1925 - 2021

HAZEL GREEN, ALABAMA – Edward John Carroll, age 96, passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, after a brief illness.

Mr. Carroll was born on January 7, 1925, at the old Carroll family homestead at 23 Kiel Avenue in Butler, NJ. He was the second son of Robert J. Carroll, Sr. and Anna (DeGraw) Carroll. 

He grew up in Butler and Stockholm (NJ). He attended St. Anthony’s Catholic Grammar School in Butler and graduated from Franklin High School in 1942 (NJ). He married Barbara Marie Foxall on June 7, 1952, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Jersey City. 

In December 1958, they followed their dream of living in the country. They purchased property and moved to Lake Tranquility, Sussex County, NJ, where they raised their four children. It truly was an idyllic life in a beautiful rural setting. In May 1986, after retirement, they relocated to Hazel Green, AL where three of their children were living. 

He was often a man of few words but was a constant and consistent example of how far hard work could take a person. He raised his children to believe that being honest and fair were most important and at the end of the day when you looked into the mirror, you had better like who you see. He taught his children to be firm in their beliefs even if they were the only individual who felt that way. Principles and rules were important to him. He believed all people had value and you just needed to find it in each person. 

He is survived by his four children, Linda Bifulco of Liberty, NY (fiancé George Stang), Michael (and Lisa) Carroll of Dumphries, VA, Stephen Carroll of Hazel Green, AL, and David (and Andrea) Carroll of Eagle River, AK; and his ten grandchildren, Rebecca (and Jack) Eagly of Huntsville, AL, Brian (and Amanda) Bifulco of Easley, SC, Jason Carroll of New Market, AL, Jeff Carroll of Huntsville, AL, Jeremy (and Lyndsi) Carroll of Huntsville, AL, Katrina Carroll of Truth or Consequences, NM, Timothy Carroll and Joseph Carroll of Las Cruces, NM, Jasmine Carroll of Ankeny, IA (fiancé Joseph Follett), and Chelsea Carroll of Eagle River, AK. Mr. Carroll is also survived by ten great-grandchildren: Patrick, Christopher, Jonathan, and Viviana Eagly, Nathaniel and Nicholas Bifulco, Frasier Carroll, Micah Carroll, and James and Caroline Burlage. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Carroll was predeceased by his wife, Barbara (Foxall) Carroll in 2018, by his parents, Robert J. Carroll, Sr. in 1968 and Anna (DeGraw) Carroll in 1976, and by his brother, Robert J. Carroll, Jr. in 1982.

As per his wishes, there will be no funeral service. Interment will be at Valhalla Cemetery and Memorial Gardens in Huntsville, AL at a later date. Thank you to Hazel Green Funeral Home for their assistance.
