Barbara Powell Travis Obituary

Barbara Ann Powell Travis died peacefully at her home in Hazel Green, Alabama on Saturday May 18th, 2019.  Barbara was 60 years old and although she had health issues over the years and lived most of her adult life in Monroe, NC, she was recently enjoying retirement in Alabama with her husband of 30 years.

Barbara was born on December 25, 1958 in Charlotte, NC to the late William W. and Betty Julian Powell.  As a Christmas baby, Barbara’s birthday was always overshadowed by the other events of the day, but she was the best gift-giver in the family – always finding just the right present to bless any child or family member around.  She graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in 1977 and had a career in retail merchandising at Carowinds and The Paper Company before going into banking.  As a Teller Supervisor, Barbara worked for PNC Bank for over 22 years and had customers follow her from branch to branch because of her superior customer service skills.  The way she treated people – family, customers or friends – will be her legacy of kindness and love.

Besides giving love to those around her, Barbara was also a fan of Alabama football and supported the Crimson Tide and loved to talk stats and players. She and Ronnie also enjoyed going to Setzer family reunions in Maggie Valley, NC.

Survivors include her husband, Ronnie Dale Travis of Hazel Green, AL, sister Debbie Powell Hopper (Gibson) of Mt. Pleasant, SC,  brother Bill Powell (Patty) of Charlotte, NC, sister-in-law Lisa Travis Belk (Mike), 7 nieces and nephews and 12 grand-nieces and nephews that she loved to spoil with gifts.  Barbara is also survived by her aunt Patricia Powell Nalley of Anderson, SC, an uncle Harold Powell of Asheboro, NC and 12 cousins who spent holidays and vacations making memories together.  After retiring in Alabama, Barbara enjoyed making new memories with the Travis relatives, who also loved her well.

A private service will be held at a later date.  Online condolences can be shared at www.hazelgreenfuneralhome.com
