It is with regret that we announce the death of Arlie Hovatter, age 95, of Meridianville. Mr. Hovatter passed away Monday at his residence. Arlie was born May 25, 1925 to Arlie and Laura Hovatter in Grafton, West Virginia. He was born on a farm with six brothers: Willis, Lester, Karl, Elbert, Kenneth, Alfred and three sisters: Nona, Dorothy and Nada. He attended schools in Grafton and lived there until he went to work in the shipyards in Maryland. He moved to Wilmington, Ohio in 1946 and worked at Clinton County Air Force Base. He married Rosemary Benlehr in 1954 while in Wilmington, Ohio. They moved to Fairborn, Ohio where he worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. When the Air Force Base had a reduction in force, Arlie came to Huntsville and was hired by the Army and worked at the Arsenal until he retired in 1980.  Arlie owned a farm in Lynchburg, Tennessee for eight years.  He loved fishing and every winter they became “Snow Birds” by going to Florida and fished at Lake Okeechobee.  They moved to Meridianville and was a member of Hazel Green Baptist Church.  Arlie was also a member of Helion Masonic Lodge #1 for 71 years. He worked as a ticket taker for the Stars Baseball team. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary Hovatter, one daughter, Nancy Rogers, his mother, father sisters and brothers.

He is survived by his children, Tom and Grace Ann Hovatter, Freddie and Lou Hovatter, three grandchildren, Rick, Justin and Alison and five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family will have a private service at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Encompass Hospice, 802 Shoney Drive Huntsville, Alabama 35801.  Hazel Green Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and honored to be serving the family.
