Mary Ann Hopkins

Mary Ann Thornton Hopkins went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 4, 2026 while resting peacefully at home in Toney, in the community where she had lived almost her entire life.

She was a Christian and an active member of Friendship Stateline Freewill Baptist Church, where she faithfully served over the years alongside her husband, Jerry. She had a special love for gospel music and, for 35 years, sang with her family gospel group, The Hopkins Family. Sharing the music she loved with her family was an important part of her life.

She was a loving person with a warm and outgoing personality who never met a stranger. She genuinely cared about others and had a special way of seeing the good in everyone she met. She could find beauty in the simplest things and, more importantly, could see something beautiful and worthwhile in every person. Her kindness and friendship touched many lives throughout the years.

Surviving family members include her husband of 64 years, Jerry Hopkins; daughter, Denise Hopkins; son, Mark Hopkins (Nikki); daughter-in-law, Gina Pigg Hopkins; sister-in-law, Gertrude Thornton; grandchildren, Mitchell Hartzell, Justin Atchley, Jasmine Hopkins, Logan Jaco, Ian Moore, along with many nieces, nephews and a host of neighbors and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Minnie Ruth and Acie Huston Thornton; son, Bryan Wayne Hopkins; sisters, Vera Slayton, Francis Oliver, Marvaline Emerson, Betty Faye Brewer, Lavonia King, and Doris Dodson; brothers, R.W. Thornton, Billy Thornton, and Douglas Thornton.

The family will receive friends. on Tuesday evening from 5pm until 8pm at the Friendship Stateline Freewill Baptist Church in Taft, Tennessee. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at 2pm at the church with Brother Larry Wimmer, Brother Clayton Bunn, and Brother Jerry Hovis officiating. Burial will then follow in Golightly Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Dale Frazier, Jeff Marable, Donnie Finley, Jay West, Michael Cowan, and Gilbert Mathis. Honorary pallbearers: Glyn Poole, Roger Hopkins, Rickey Hopkins, Ronnie Hopkins, Terrell Hopkins, Gene Anderson, Tracy Brewer, and Gary Thornton.
