Gary Steve Thomas - ‘Big Tit”, 79 of Hazel Green, AL gained his Silver Wings and went to his heavenly home Friday, October 10, 2025 around 5:36 a.m. surrounded by his loved ones in the comfort of his home. He was born on September 6, 1946 in Toney, Alabama to Homer Devon Thomas and Opal Irene (Hopper) Thomas. In 1968, Gary met the love of his life, Barbara Ann (Clark) Thomas. They married September 13, 1969 and they shared 56 wonderful years together with 7 children.

Gary retired from The City of Huntsville after 38 years in the Sanitation department. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved spending his time with family and friends camping, fishing and hunting. He loved watching his westerns. He was always available to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, especially the children. There was nothing he enjoyed more than gathering toys for local kids for Christmas, calling it “Santa’s Helpers”. He spent hours sitting in his chair as Mr. Santa and handing out toys. Gary may no longer be here with us, but he has instilled a legacy that will live on forever to anyone who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his father Homer Devon Thomas, his mother Opal Hopper Thomas, brothers Lucky Devon Thomas and Homer Lonzo Thomas, and sister Lynda Gale Elledge. He has joined life with his 9 heavenly grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Clark Thomas; daughter, Jackie (Sam) Greer; son, Steven (Tonya) Thomas; daughter, Cathy (Calvin) Taylor; daughter, Johanna (Chad) Bratcher; Son, Garry (Kimberly) Thomas; son Daniel “Greg” (Valerie) Thomas; daughter, April “Cheyenne” Tipton; 23 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October 13, 2025 at Hazel Green Funeral Home from 4:00-6:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow on Monday, October 13, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. at Hazel Green Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Terrel Boyd officiating. Cremation will follow after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to support Gary’s final wishes to help children for Christmas. Cash or toys can be brought to the funeral home or dropped off at His and Hers Bargain Bin store in Hazel Green located at 14957 US-231 S Hazel Green, AL 35750
