Doug Phillips

Douglas Ray Phillips, 89, of Hazel Green, Alabama, passed away on June 30, 2025 peacefully at his home. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served as a paratrooper for four years.

Doug was born January 27, 1936 in Cullman, Alabama, the youngest son of Walter Phillips and Rosie Qualls. He received his GED then went on to the University of Alabama at Birmingham and received a degree in accounting.

He married Myra Speegle on June 17, 1960 in Birmingham, Alabama. They shared two children, Gayla and Ray, one granddaughter, Faren, and two great- grandsons Kamden and Lawson. Doug and Myra recently celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Doug worked as an Agent for State Farm Insurance. He was very successful and met many goals during his time working for them. He especially loved spending time with his family, fishing, reading, gardening, watching the news, and going to his great grandson’s baseball games. Doug was a Christian and a member of First Baptist of Hazel Green and Agape Church in Scottsboro. He served as Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and was involved in jail ministry.

Remaining to cherish Doug's memory are spouse; Myra Phillips, children, Gayla (Chris McElyea); grandchildren, Faren (Shane Condrey); great- grandchildren, Kamden and Lawson. As well as many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Doug in death were his parents Walter and Rosie Phillips; son Ray Phillips, three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 1pm at the First Baptist Church of Hazel Green with Pastor Bobby Eads and Pastor David Spiers officiating. The family will begin receiving friends two hours before the service. After the church service, a graveside service will follow at New Hope Cemetery located on County Road 1698 in Cullman County.
