Dennis was born to Thomas Carl Lawson and Martha Moreland Lawson on December 27, 1956 in Camden, New Jersey. The family moved to Huntsville, Alabama in 1961 where Dennis and his brothers, Greg and Richard, spent their childhood. Dennis became a ham radio operator at the age of ten, which became a lifelong hobby. Dennis was involved in ROTC and the radio club during high school, graduating from Grissom High School in 1975.
Dennis attended the University of North Alabama and graduated in 1979. He worked in the electronic manufacturing field during his career. He began his career in outside sales with Radio Shack and Hallmark Electronics and ended his career in supply chain management at Beyond Gravity.
It was at UNA that Dennis met the love of his life, Janet Harlan. Dennis and Janet met at the Christian Student Center in the fall of 1976 while participating in group activities. Dennis reminded Janet of Elton John, with his auburn red hair and sideburns.
They were married on April 12, 1980 and welcomed their son, Craig the following year. Dennis was a devoted husband and a loving and supportive father. He coached sports, became a Boy Scout leader, and always enjoyed family gatherings. Through his support and involvement, Dennis was a good example of how a father should serve and provide.
Dennis was a dedicated Christian and spent much time involved in the work of the church. He served as a deacon at Meridianville Church of Christ and Chase Park Church of Christ. He was involved in starting the Lads to Leaders program at Meridianville. He taught Bible classes, preached part-time at Elkmont COC and started the Sunshine Group for the widows and widowers at Chase Park. For the past ten years, Dennis faithfully served as an elder at Chase Park Church of Christ.
Dennis was honored to perform the wedding ceremony for his son, Craig and his wife Lauren in 2009. Later, he became “Pops” to Caroline and Thomas and excelled in this role. He was always willing to tell them a story, play a game, or show them how to put together a train set.
Throughout his life, he attended ham radio conferences and valued his friendships with the Mercury Amateur Radio Association members. He was a pillar in the North Alabama ham radio community.
Dennis will be remembered for his love for the Lord and the way he always cherished his family and grandchildren. Dennis had a patient nature and stayed positive even during difficult circumstances. He was always willing to help others and showed love and compassion.
Dennis passed away on September 26, 2026 at Huntsville Hospital. Though he had faced ongoing health challenges in recent years, his passing came as a sudden and unexpected loss.
Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Carl Lawson and Martha Moreland Lawson. He is survived by his wife, Janet; his son, Craig and his wife Lauren, and their children, Caroline and Thomas; brother, Greg (Tammy) Lawson; brother Richard (Diana) Lawson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
