Hal loved living on the Florida Gulf Coast where he spent his retirement years growing tropical plants, observing the seabirds and wildlife, spending time in the natural world, studying mechanical science and photonics, traveling with his wife, driving his 1980 TR8 and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James Marion Maddox and Nellie Gray Maddox, brother, Carlos James Maddox, sisters, Virginia "Tuta" Callen, Ann Maselli, Vivian Cobb, and daughter Anya Paulette Maddox.
